CCUS - CARBON CAPTURE, UTILIZATION & SEQUESTRATION
CCUS Modules
CCUS Course can now be purchased in modules.
CMG is partnering with us!
We are pleased to announce the conclusion of a partnership agreement with Computer Modelling Group Ltd, to provide a comprehensive CCUS training going forward.
CMG’s software would be used, in class, to demonstrate physical and chemical aspects of the CCUS processes thereby deepening the training experience.
The course module would give an overview of the modelling options built into the GEM simulator for CO2 Storage and Capture in an aquifer. A 2D model will be built and various CCS modelling tools will be progressively added on, starting from simple structural trapping down to mineralisation. The effect of each added process will be analysed in detail. A purpose-designed CCS graphical user interface will be used for adding the CO2 trapping mechanisms into the models, including connecting to geochemical databases for accurate mineralisation and dissolution modelling of geochemical species, including water vaporisation phenomena. The issue of possible caprock failure will be represented using CMG’s geomechanical options for fracture generation connected with rock stress changes.
Finally, a 3D thermal GEM model will be connected to CMG’s Well/Surface Network modelling tool CoFlow. The user will learn how to import the model into CoFlow and build a wellbore model to control the well on tubing head pressure and temperature constraints.
Course Module Content in the Reservoir Engineering Aspect:
- Base model with structural trapping
- Hysteresis Trapping
- Solubility Trapping
- Barton-Bandis Fracture Permeability Model
- Mineral Trapping
- Water Vaporisation
- 3D GHG Model with Geomechanics
- Wellbore Modelling with CoFlow with coupling to GEM
Who should attend?
This course is designed for anyone that is in any way, shape or form involved in the technologies, mechanisms and instruments of the carbon capture, utilization and sequestration value chain. It is for anyone interested in, and/or that is tasked with CCUS as a prolific solution to the global warming problem. The structure of this course is such that it highlights the core effects of human civilization from the pre-industrial development times till date, and teaches one of the best ways out of the global warming dilemma. Everybody can be a part of CCUS! We are all stakeholders and our future could depend on it!
Why should you take this course?
This course is designed for geoscientists, petroleum engineers, process/facilities engineers, managers, investors, regulators and government officials whose job it is to facilitate CCUS. After attending this course you would understand the processes that have given rise to major climatic catastrophes that are prevalent in the earth and know the necessary steps to be taken to reduce/reverse them going forward.
Course Methodology and Philosophy
In this course, the causal issues of global warming and one of the more prolific solutions thereof are taught. Everyone that takes the course would understand the origin of global warming and find the part that they can play in the solution process.
What is Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration?
CCUS is the Capture of carbon dioxide, which is the major greenhouse gas responsible for global warming, from the various sources of emission and the atmosphere, and their utilization for manufacturing, enhance oil recovery and storage in deep reservoirs and saline aquifers underground.
Course Objectives:
Introduction
After completing this section, you would be able to identify the greenhouse gas making the most contribution to global warming and understand the methodologies used to forecast its future effects on global climate. You would also understand that the present trend of things, which show increasing draughts, desertification, rising sea levels, more frequent tornados and all such weather phenomena, all of which the forecast tools have been able to match, would continue based on the forecast, unless reasonable actions are taken.
Carbon Capture
At the end of this section you would know the different gases that are produced with CO2 and be introduced to the available technologies for capturing and separating them, and also be able to make the right choice of carbon capture method that is the best for your project.
Reservoir Engineering Aspects with CMG Reservoir Simuation Software Suites
Upon completing this section, you would know what processes are at work in your underground storage receptacles over time, after injecting CO2 into them. The different available natural physical and chemical processes are explained such that engineers and geoscientists can take full advantage of them during planning and implementation of CCUS projects, and that stakeholders’ confidence can be gotten regarding the durability of sequestration process.
Well Design Considerations
After this section, you would understand the importance of having multiple barriers in your CCUS project wells. You would know the reason that the pressure at the sand face perforations is higher at abandonment in the case of CCUS project wells, in contrast to conventional wells. You would also know the importance of choosing the right Corrosion Resistant Alloys, materials and cement for well casing, tubulars and installations.
Underground Storage
This section deals with the various types of storage facilities available for CCUS projects. After completing it you would be in the position to identify suitably safe, secure and permanent storage units and their capacity. You would also learn the risks inherent in using active tectonic and faulty zones for CO2 storage.
Measurement, Monitoring and Verification
For the safety of the environment this section would teach you how to verify the storage quality, monitor their migration pathways using dedicated tools and ensure the seal integrity of the storage unit.
CO2 Transportation
After completing this section, you would be able to choose the CO2 transport type that best suits your project, decide on the optimum conveyance route, the best CO2 phase and accompanying composition to convey.
